Where to Buy a Second-Hand Dining Table in Sydney (and What to Check First)

Customer inspecting a wooden dining table in a second-hand furniture showroom to check its condition, construction and suitability for the home.

The dining table is one of the most challenging furniture items to purchase when it comes to being affordable. Purchasing a new table from some of the biggest stores around may be too expensive, at prices that range between $1,500 and $3,000, and even a second-hand table from a stranger on an internet website may come with uneven legs and watermarks, and you may even have no means of knowing what you are purchasing until you reach the other side of the city.

This guide starts with the answer to where, and then helps you find the best table within your price range.

The Short Answer

Dining Tables on Our Floor at Wetherill Park

The tables in our showroom are pieces that didn't make it to regular retail stores for various reasons. Some are showroom samples or display models, while others are surplus stock, discontinued designs, or items with damaged packaging but no damage to the table itself.

They come from the same types of manufacturers that supply well-known furniture stores, so you can find stylish, modern tables at much lower prices.

The majority of items are once-off. Once a table is sold, it won't be restocked. In case you like some tables at our site, then it would be wise to contact us and book them prior to your visit.

What "Second-Hand" and "Seconds" Actually Mean

People often search for second-hand furniture, but the term can mean three different things. Understanding the differences helps you know what you're buying, compare prices, and avoid unexpected surprises.

  1. Pre-owned: This table has some history, either good or bad. There are people who have been eating on this table for many years and perhaps even completed their assignments. The cost can be affordable, but there is no assurance of the condition of the table.

  2. Used display or showroom sample: This table has been displayed in a showroom. There might be some slight traces of the table being used or handled by people, but not that the table has been used regularly at a family dining table.

  3. Factory second, overstock or new factory box stock: Such tables are cheaper due to how they have been sourced. Some reasons include cancelling of orders, products no longer available, excess from an order and damage in shipping.

As for our products on this floor, the majority are from the second and third categories. This is how we distinguish our sales from that of buying a used table from an individual, since in many cases, you will be getting a table that is brand new or as good as new.

Sometimes, a product may have a slight cosmetic defect due to handling during delivery. If that happens, we label the product and take pictures of the defect for you to see. We do not fix or refinish any product just to make it look new, so there is nothing hidden. More details can be found in the factory second vs. second-hand guide.

What a Second-Hand Dining Table Costs in Sydney

Price depends on size, materials used and condition of tables. Tables that are large, made out of wood and have extension capabilities are generally expensive compared to small veneer or laminate tables, which fall in the lower bracket.

As an estimate from our own flooring, new-in-box or demonstration dining tables in the range of 190cm to 270cm were available between $600 to $900 with savings of about 46% to 50% of their original price tag.

A few factors affecting pricing include:

  • Size and Seating: A table that seats four will cost significantly less than an 8 to 10-seater table measuring 270cm in length.

  • Materials: Solid timber will cost more compared to veneer or engineered timber.

  • Type of Base: Tables that have pedestal or statement bases may be priced higher than those with four-legged bases.

  • Condition: New stock will be priced higher than tables that were previously displayed but have light marks on them.

Have a budget to work with? Look at second-hand furniture that costs less than $500 or second-hand furniture that is between $500 and $1,000.

How to Check a Dining Table Before You Buy

Whether you purchase from us, a private dealer, or from somewhere else, this is what we would inspect on a table before purchasing one:

  1. Conduct the wobble test: Apply pressure to the table from all four corners. There should be no movement or creaking in the legs or joints where the legs attach to the top surface.

  2. Examine the table surface: Water marks, scratches, chipping, raised veneer, and cracks along the edges and corners must be assessed. Use bright lights, preferably sunlight, and run your hands along the edges.

  3. Test the extendable mechanism: If your table is extendable, fully open it and then shut it once. The runners should slide smoothly, and the leaf must fit with no gaps.

  4. Undertake an inspection of the underside: Examine the joints, brackets and screws under the table top. Loose fixtures are easily tightened, but cracks in the wood or stripped screws are not.

  5. Calculate the seating capacity: Each person needs approximately 60cm of table width. A 190cm table will comfortably seat six people, whereas eight to ten people require 240cm to 270cm of table space.

  6. Room measurement is important: Keep a distance of 90 centimetres between the edge of the table and other furniture, walls and the like in order to facilitate easy movement behind chairs.

  7. Pedestal vs four legs: A pedestal base leaves more legroom and allows space for an additional chair. Four-legged tables have better stability on long tables but reduce chair placement options.

  8. Chair compatibility: Be sure to consider chair heights that complement your table, and find out whether chairs will be provided with your table. You can also browse our dining chairs collection.

  9. Doorways and stairwell measurements: There is no point in having a 270cm table if it cannot fit into your door opening or move through stairwell corridors.

  10. Returns and warranty: Seconds and second-hand items come with a limited warranty. Make sure you understand it before purchasing.

Getting It Home: Pick up and Delivery in Sydney

Big dining tables are difficult to transport, which is why you should plan for that beforehand.

Pick up from Wetherill Park. You can collect your table from the warehouse floor on the same day. Bring a vehicle big enough for the table, along with covers and straps for the top. Our large car park makes loading much easier than on a narrow street.

Delivery across Sydney and NSW. We offer second-hand furniture delivery for an additional fee. The cost depends on your postcode, so ask for a quote before making your payment. Extra services, such as carrying furniture up stairs or moving it more than 20 metres from the delivery vehicle, may cost more and are paid directly to the delivery team.

Before delivery, measure all doorways and corners along the route to your dining area. Let the delivery team know about any stairs or narrow spaces when requesting your quote to avoid unexpected costs or access problems.

Questions People Ask

Are second-hand dining tables worth buying?
Often, yes. Furniture prices can include large retail markups, so buying ex-display, seconds, or second-hand pieces can help you save money while getting similar build quality. The important thing is to check the table carefully before buying. If you want to understand the possible downsides, our article on the cons of second-hand furniture explains both the benefits and the risks.

Is a "seconds" table damaged?
Not usually. A seconds table works properly and isn't damaged. It's cheaper because of where it came from, such as overstock, a discontinued range or transit damage to the packaging. If an item has a cosmetic blemish, we point it out.

Can I return a second-hand table?
Second-hand stocks will be delivered as they are, hence the reduced prices. Before making your payment, it will be wise to review the second-hand furniture return policy. If possible, take time to examine the table.

Can I see the table before I buy?
Yes, and that's the biggest benefit of buying from a showroom instead of an online listing. Visit Wetherill Park any day of the week to see the exact piece you'll take home.

Do you deliver?
Sure, but for a cost. Please ask for a quote first based on your postcode and inform us about any staircases or difficult access.
